Following ARM’s development of on chip Java, Matsushita has announced one of the first 3G mobile phones using this technology, to be launched next year. Ericsson “is not expecting a mass market in 3G to develop before 2005″, and some analysts believe the roll-out could be delayed further. Ovum’s recent projection of 3G growth is “14.3 percent of the world’s mobile connections by 2007”. By then, “data transmission [could cost] 80% less than 2.5G technologies like GPRS”.
