As this year’s NAB comes to a triumphant end, it has left the team at Forscene feeling very excited about the future. 2016 has been a brilliant show, with a record high amount of traffic coming to our booth, from both existing clients and potential new ones! With our recent wins with the likes of Leftfield Entertainment and Magilla Entertainment, it has created a peak in interest in our potential US clients, as we are starting to break out further into the US market.

Forscene in the Press

At this year’s NAB, we were showing three major new features: our virtual ingest server, closed captions, and double system audio.

Neil Roberts, Forscene’s  Head of R&D and Support, was interviewed by  SVG, where he explained with real world examples  how each new feature works and the importance to have them within this industry. Forscene is all about time and cost efficiency, which is why we’ve tailored these features to make them as effective as possible within a post-production workflow. TVB Europe also ran a piece on Forscene in their NAB roundup feature.We were also featured in  Broadcast Tech magazine’s NAB preview issue, with a detailed link at our new auto sync tool meeting with US guidelines.

NAB Show video interviews

Also at the show, we partook in several video interviews. The first was on Day 1 of the show, where RedShark News’ David Shapton interviewed our Business Development Director, Jason Cowan on the NAB Show Live. The two discussed Forscene’s offering to the North American market and made history, as it was the first live video recording transmitting in virtual reality. You can watch the full interview here:

Moreover, Cowan was also interviewed by TV Bay’s KitPlus team, who are at the show every year recording the latest and greatest things to see.

And lastly, It wouldn’t be NAB without some great networking events: the Forscene  team attended the  always entertaining Object Matrix Sports Evening, the IABM Advance Show party and the NABA/DPP Specification Launch event, which was a new initiative at this year’s show. As Forscene are members of these latter two organisations, it was an excellent opportunity to meet with fellow industry professionals.

New Forscene features

New Forscene features aimed at improving the cutting experience for both edit-producers and editors will be released to existing clients on the 8^th of February 2016 and demonstrated at BVE.  These include:

• The ability to import, display and edit track-names directly on the timeline, and export them as part of an AAF
• Optional clip-name display on the timeline
• The introduction of a solo button which enables one-click, single-track monitoring
• Multiple improvements to sequence logging, including the ability to log and store sequence logging information separately from the source
• Improved support for sharing published clips in the chat window
• Support for HLS as a streaming format with media arriving as growing files

Workflow recipes for success

Forscene’s expanded stand will also include a workflow lounge where leading industry experts will be available to share and discuss their recipes for success on using the UK’s leading cloud-based post-production platform to create more efficient, more creative workflows.

Finally, Forscene will host a cloud editing masterclass at the BVE Post Production Theatre on Tuesday the 23^rd of February from 16:20 to 17:00.  The session will focus on practical ways to  make the most of cloud-based remote editing systems and will include advice from leading post-production teams.

Princess Productions Tests New Release

Many of the new features were requested by longtime Forscene client Princess Productions, who was integrally involved in the development and testing process.

“We’ve been using Forscene for the past five years to save time and money in edit — particularly on factual entertainment series and high-shoot-ratio productions,” said Paul Jones, head of post-production for Princess Productions, part of the Endemol Shine Group. “The new features are currently being put to the test on series 3 of Channel 4’s ‘The Island with Bear Grylls’ in a workflow that sees complex multivideo and audio track sequences move from Avid to Forscene and back again, which would not have been possible before this release. Working with the Forscene product development team has delivered a solution that allows our teams in Panama and London to collaborate on edits the day after the footage is shot.”

Importing AAF Files into Forscene

The ability to import Avid AAF files — and autoconform timelines based on this data — is one of the release’s much-anticipated features. Long-form broadcast clients often log and create rough cuts in Forscene and then move to Avid to complete their edits. This new feature means that clients can now move seamlessly between Avid and Forscene at any point during the offline edit.

In one scenario, clients can use the feature to make Avid sequences available for review by parties in different locations. Rather than exporting a QuickTime^® clip from Avid and then importing it into Forscene, clients can now make the actual Avid timeline available in Forscene.

In another example, the feature allows production and post teams to collaborate on cuts. Once an editor has refined a sequence created in Forscene, he or she can recreate the Avid timeline in Forscene for the production team to continue working on it.

Other New Features Included in the Release

Other noteworthy additions to Forscene’s feature list include:

• Support for up to 12 active video tracks and 24 audio tracks on the timeline
• The unique ability to concurrently see all video tracks in a sequence during playback — and to easily toggle between this multidisplay grid view and the usual top-down view of video layers
• The option to publish audio-only clips in a variety of formats
• Faster publishing for video content with added graphics and overlays

BITAM Show is an annual Broadcast, IT, Audio and Media trade fair held in Spain. It features sector experts with lectures, roundtable debates and technical conferences as well as exhibits by leading manufacturers and distributors. This year the fair will be held at the Pabellón de Convenciones de la Casa de Campo de Madrid from the 24th to the 26th of November. The show is relatively new – established in 2013 – but is already identified as the industry’s most important local event. AvCast will be exhibiting for the first time at BITAM Show 2015 and can be found in prime position near the main entrance on stand 5.

Speaking Events at IBC2015
The Forscene team will host the panel discussion “How the cloud is changing post workflows” in the Technology In Action Theatre, 3.A19, on Saturday, Sept. 12, at 14:30. This discussion will investigate the impact that the cloud has had across different sectors – from reality talent shows to sports highlights and observational documentaries. Cowan’s 30-minute case study presentation on Wednesday is geared toward business-to-business organizations and will focus on how to find, develop, and cultivate successful partnerships with resellers and distributors abroad. The case study covers points such as how to identify partners that fit with your brand, choosing an appropriate sales model based on sector and territory, and training resellers in your brand and technology. UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) works with U.K.-based businesses to ensure their success in international markets through exports. During Thursday’s session, Cowan and his fellow industry professionals will explore fresh perspectives on remote-editing possibilities and collaboration opportunities for post.
